Why Use Almond Flour for Streusel Topping

I love to bake with almond flour. It results in a soft fine texture and a subtle nutty flavor. Unlike traditional wheat flour, almond flour does not contain wheat or gluten.

All of my delicious moist coffee cakes are made with almond flour and topped with this streusel topping recipe which creates a harmonious balance of tastes and texture.

So if you also love making baked goods with almond flour, you need to try adding this topping to your rotation.

Ingredients for Almond Flour Streusel Topping

Almond Flour is the base for this streusel topping which provides a soft, light and crumbly texture.

Coconut Sugar is the only sweetener in this recipe. I love baking with coconut sugar because it provides a subtle caramel flavor.

Coconut Oil will need to be melted before using in this recipe. It adds a rich and buttery flavor for the crumble topping.

Cinnamon is an optional ingredient. It adds warmth and a slightly spicy aroma to this streusel topping. Being a very versatile spice, cinnamon is sweet and complements a lot of desserts or sweet treats. So I find it fits perfectly in this streusel topping.

But you can also use other spices like apple pie spice in the topping for this apple bread recipe with crumble topping, or pumpkin pie spice in this pumpkin coffee cake recipe.

Moreover, you can omit it altogether if what you are baking may not work with cinnamon or you are not a fan of this spice.

How to Make Almond Flour Crumble Topping

Coconut oil becomes solid once it is cooled to or below room temperature. So the crumble topping mixture will harden and can be formed in chunks.

Now you just need to gently spread them across the baked goods you are ready to use.

Here is an example an SKS favorite Apple Bread with Streusel Topping where I used this almond flour recipe.

How to Assemble Almond Flour Streusel Topping

Here is the tricky part when it comes to creating different-sized streusel chunks on top of our baked goods.

When we first mix the topping ingredients together, it will have a wet sand-like texture.

Once the mixture is refrigerated for 20 minutes, the coconut oil will solidify and now they are ready to be molded into big or small chunks.

The best way to assemble the crumble topping is to use our hands. Take a handful of mixture and spread them across the top of cake, bread or any baked goods we have in a baking dish. While transferring the mixture, squeeze the mixture with your hands to form some chunks .

Not to brag, but my husband is obsessed with any baked goods with this crumble topping. The unique combination of flavors and textures will elevate your baked goods to a whole new level.

With only 3 ingredients, these are so easy to whip up and it will make any dessert you bake that much fancier. Hope you love it as much as we do!
