Fall is in full swing and I am baking up a storm with fresh apples and pumpkins multiple times a week.

Almost all sweet apple recipes call for apple pie spice, and while it’s pretty easy to find in most grocery stores, it’s so easy to make it yourself in your own kitchen.

I have been using my apple pie blend for years, for example in these new Apple Pie Crumble Bars and this Apple Bread with Crumble Topping.

And it generates the warmest of flavors, perfect for all the fall baking.

What is apple pie spice made of?

piled of allspice, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and nutmeg

If you are a home-baker, I’m sure you have been using apple pie spice before. But have you actually read the label and checked what’s in it?

The thing is, there is no exact rule of which spices that needs to be included in apple pie spice for it to be called that. However, some are more common than others.

For my homemade apple pie spice I’m using:

  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Allspice
  • Ginger
  • Cardamom

They all compliment each other so well and it’s the perfect blend of warm, rich, and fragrant flavors with a hint of heat.

You might recognize the mix of spices from pumpkin pie spice. And while most of the spices are the same, the difference between apple pie spice and pumpkin pie spice is that latter has coves in it.

But with that being said, you can absolutely use this apple pie spice for your pumpkin recipes as well.

Reasons to make your own apple pie spice

You might ask yourself why should I make my own spice blend when I can buy it in the store?

Well, like most things homemade, there are a lot of reasons to choose homemade compared to store-bought.

Cheaper

Making homemade apple pie spice is cheaper than buying it. Mostly because you probably have some or all of the spices at home already.

But also, if you have to buy some of the spices, you can use them for different purposes later than just this apple spice, making it a smarter purchase.

Fresher

Believe it or not, spices expire just like everything else that’s eatable. By making it yourself, you can guarantee it’s freshly made.

However, most spices are not bad to eat after their expiration date, the flavor has just faded and is not as pungent.

Adjust to taste

By making the apple pie spice yourself, you can add more or less of the spices you love and dislike.

As for me, I love ginger, so therefore I’m adding extra ginger to my mixture. And if there is a spice you dislike, (I know allspice is one of those spices people can’t stand) then you can simply omit it.

No additives

In pre-made spice blends, especially the cheaper ones, there tend to be additives like sugar and preservatives. Making your own will guarantee that’s not the case.

How to store Homemade Apple pie Spice

If you double or triple this recipe to make a large batch of apple pie spice mix, make sure you store it in an air-tight container, either in glass or in plastic.

My best hack is to repurpose an old spice jar. Simple clean it out and make sure it is completely dry before adding your freshly made apple spice.

Now you can store your homemade apple pie spice with style, and with a built-in shaker.
