Apple Crisp Macchiato {4 Ingredients}
Made with homemade brown sugar apple syrup, frothy milk and strong espresso, this Starbucks copycat Apple Crisp Macchiato is the drink of the fall. It is delicious and is made healthier and cheaper at home.
Have you tried the new Apple Crisp Macchiato from Starbucks yet?
I did, and it was so delicious! And of course, I had to make my own healthier version of this new Starbucks fall drink at home!
And with just a few simple ingredients and healthier alternatives, this is the result: A creamy, frothy, slightly sweet, and comforting cup of homemade Apple Crisp Macchiato.
I used to be a Starbucks “addict”. So I love making my own copycat version of Starbucks drinks.
Make sure you try this Mocha Latte (a little spicy) or this Pumpkin Spice Latte this fall as well.
What does an Apple Crisp Macchiato taste like?
It’s Fall AF!
Apple and coffee might not seem like the obvious combination, I agree. I myself was also a little skeptical before I tasted it.
But I wouldn’t describe the flavor as very fruit-forward and it’s nothing like a Granny Smith apple.
Think more like ooey-gooey apple pie or a caramel apple.
Now you can easily understand why it goes so well with coffee.
It’s basically like having warm apple pie, melted vanilla ice cream, and a cup of coffee in one. Sounds like the perfect dessert to me!
This homemade Apple Crisp Macchiato also has a hint of cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg from the apple cider it’s flavored with. As well as caramel flavors from the brown sugar.
What is in starbucks apple crisp macchiato
To make this delicious fall drink all you need are
- Brown Sugar Apple Syrup
- Espresso or strong coffee
- Milk
And ice, if that’s how you prefer to drink your coffee.
I’ll give you the brown sugar apple syrup recipe in a bit.
What milk to use for a creamy macchiato
This fall-flavored coffee drink can be enjoyed both hot and iced.
If you serve it hot, the milk should be frothed for the best experience. If you don’t have a milk frother or steamer, you can whisk or shake the milk as well. However, that requires some serious muscles…
The best milk for frothing is without a doubt whole milk.
However, if you want to keep this recipe vegan, I prefer to use oat milk. You can get a good froth going with some quality oat milk.
My homemade cashew milk is also a good option for a vegan macchiato.
I also like Nut Pods creamer, which does froth really well.
If you are planning on serving the Starbucks copycat apple crisp macchiato iced, there is no need to froth your milk.
With that being said, it means that you don’t have to consider how well the milk froths when choosing your milk. If you are using plant-based milk, make sure it’s plain and unsweetened. Otherwise, I think it would be too much.
What’s in Brown Sugar Apple Syrup
The star of this homemade Apple Crisp Macchiato is the brown sugar apple syrup. It’s what makes this fall espresso drink what it is.
It’s really easy to make and all you need are
- 1 large apple – Honey crisp is my favorite, but you can use any of your favorites.
- Brown sugar – You can also use coconut sugar
- Apple cider – You can also use water and apple pie spice
What apples to use for the syrup
I like using honey crisp or gala apples for this brown sugar apple syrup. They are both on the sweeter side, which is exactly what we want for this spiced syrup.
How to make apple crisp syrup
Start with washing the apple and roughly core the apple. Then thinly slice the apple.
Then, in a small to medium-sized pot, combine apple slices, apple cider, and brown sugar.
Bring to a boil and then turn to simmer. Cover the pot and let it simmer for 10 minutes.
Using a masher or wooden spoon, press the apples a few times to get the apples to release more juice. At this point, the apples should be pretty soft.
Cover again, and let the apple syrup simmer for 30 – 40 minutes.
Turn the heat off and take to pot from the stove. Let the brown sugar apple syrup cool for 8 – 10 minutes and then pour it into a jar through a strainer or nut milk bag and squeeze as much juice as possible out from the apples.
I prefer using a nut milk bag to squeeze out more syrup and juice while leaving the solids behind. You can use the leftover apples for apple sauce! It is sweet and tart. It’s also perfect to smear on a toast. Whatever you do, don’t waste it!
Then, let the syrup cool in the fridge for at least half an hour.
What to add to Apple Crisp Macchiato
It’s finally time to assemble the Apple Crisp Macchiato, which is done by layering each ingredient on top of the other.
If you are making an iced fall espresso drink, start by adding a lot of ice cubes to a tall glass.
Add the brown sugar apple syrup to a cup or a glass. Depending on how sweet you prefer the apple crisp coffee to be, add more or less syrup.
Then, add 2 shots of espresso. If you don’t have an espresso maker, use an equal amount of very strongly brewed regular coffee.
For a hot macchiato, heat the milk, either on the stove or in the microwave. The perfect temperature is around 150F. It’s hot, but not simmering. The milk should never be boiling. Use a food thermometer if you want it to be perfect.
Then, froth the hot milk well.
Then, pour the milk, hot or cold, over the espresso.
Lastly, drizzle the apple crisp macchiato with more apple syrup if desired.
What to serve with the fall espresso drink
This sweet and delicious Starbucks copycat apple crisp macchiato is for sure delicious on its own, and might not even demand a sidekick. Nevertheless, I’m always down for something extra!
- Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins are the perfect pairing for a delicious afternoon pick me up
- A stack of fluffy Sweet Potato Pancakes topped with Apple Butter and an Apple Crisp Macchiato would make to most extra brunch I could ever dream of!
- Pumpkin Oatmeal Bars would obviously go amazing with this fall espresso drink as well.
How to Store the Brown Sugar Apple Syrup
The spiced apple syrup can be stored in the fridge for a couple of weeks.
Make a large batch and have easy access to this amazing brown sugar apple syrup all week long!
It’s time for you to whip this delicious Apple Crisp Macchiato Starbucks copycat up!

Notes
The Nutrition Facts above are specific to the ingredients I chose to use for this recipe, which may vary.
How much apple cider? I don’t see it in the ingredient list at all.
Hi Angel,
It would either be 1 cup of apple cider, or 1 cup of water dependent on what you have on hand. We have noted this in the recipe card now.
Hope you enjoy 🙂
