20 Minutes Sweet and Sour Tofu (Made with Honey)
Do you still order sweet and sour tofu from a Chinese takeout spot? Stop — and try this homemade version instead. It’s crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and comes together in about 20 minutes. No deep frying required.
It’s the perfect busy weeknight dinner for the whole family — especially when you’re cooking for little picky eaters who love anything sweet and saucy.

My family ate a lot of tofu growing up in China. It was one of my parents’ easiest go-to meals. Tofu is incredibly versatile — it’s like a blank canvas that absorbs whatever flavors you give it.
This sweet and sour tofu recipe is a little different from typical takeout versions. The tofu is lightly coated and pan-fried until crispy, giving you that golden texture without deep frying. The sauce is also surprisingly simple. It only requires three ingredients: ketchup, honey, and rice vinegar.
And yes — ketchup.
My kids love anything sweet and sour, so this tofu dish is naturally a big hit in our house.
If you’ve ever thought tofu was bland or boring, let me change your mind.

This Sweet and Sour Tofu Will Be Your New Family-Favorite
The magic of this dish is all about texture contrast.
When tofu develops a crispy outer layer while staying soft and tender inside, it creates the perfect bite. That crispy coating also helps the sweet and sour sauce cling to every piece.
The sauce itself is inspired by my mom’s cooking. Growing up, I had no idea sweet and sour sauce could be made with ketchup. It sounds unexpected, but it works beautifully. You don’t need much of it, so the ketchup flavor isn’t overpowering.
Instead, it creates a perfectly balanced sauce that’s sweet, tangy, and glossy — the kind that coats the tofu and makes every bite incredibly satisfying.
For me, this dish tastes like childhood comfort food.
What Tofu to Use for this Recipe
There are several different types of tofu available, and choosing the right one makes a big difference for texture.
I have tested them all, and the winner is definitely firm tofu. It sits right in the middle between extra-firm tofu and silky tofu, which makes it ideal for pan-frying recipes like this one.
Many tofu recipes you see outside of China call for extra-firm tofu because it contains less water and has a denser texture. That makes it great for air fryer recipes or dishes where you want something very chewy and sturdy.
Personally, I prefer the softer texture that firm tofu provides. For this sweet and sour tofu, that contrast between the crispy outside and tender inside works beautifully.
Silken tofu, on the other hand, is very delicate and better suited for soups, sauces, or cold dishes. It’s too fragile for stir-fry style recipes like this.
How to make The Best Sweet and Sour Tofu

Let’s add the sauce!

My Favorite Ways to Pair This Dish
I love adding crunchy vegetables to this sweet and sour tofu. They bring freshness to the dish and add a nice contrast in texture.
Some great additions include:
- bell peppers
- snap peas
- onions
- carrots
- pineapple
These ingredients pair naturally with sweet and sour flavors and make the dish even more colorful and satisfying.
When it comes to serving, you probably already know my favorite pairing: jasmine rice. I serve jasmine rice with most of my Chinese recipes because it’s simple and allows the flavors of the dish to shine.
Since the tofu and sauce are already so flavorful, something plain like rice balances everything perfectly.
Another easy way to turn this into a complete dinner is by making a rice bowl. Add fresh toppings like sliced cucumbers, shredded carrots, or sesame seeds for extra crunch and freshness.
